Important Questions to Ask Your Pest Control Service Company

by Devon Perez

If your home has a pest infestation, or if you're worried about termites, rodents and the like, you want to call a pest control service company right away. A pest infestation is very unhealthy for you and is also dangerous to your home, as pests can chew through wiring, drywall and wood studs. When you are ready to call a pest control service, note a few important questions to ask so you know what's involved and are sure to keep your property and family safe.

Ask about anyone in the family with asthma, allergies and other sensitivities

In most cases, pest control treatments will not adversely affect someone with breathing disorders or other sensitivities, but it may be recommended that the person avoid the home for several hours after treatment, even overnight. This allows the chemicals used for pest control to settle onto surfaces of the home so they're not still airborne and won't get inhaled by the person with sensitivities. While you may not need to worry about severe reactions, it's good to ask what the pest control service company would recommend so that you or your family member is not at risk.

Ask how to clean up if you accidentally touch a treated area

Treated areas of your home may still have chemicals present for some time after treatment; rarely is it a health hazard to actually touch these chemicals, but you might want to ask what to do if this should happen. Your pest control expert may recommend that you simply wash with soap and water or apply some type of topical treatment to your skin.

If there are children in the home, you also want to know what to do if he or she should ingest the poison. It might be recommended that they drink milk to dilute the substance, or you might need to visit an emergency clinic. Whatever the case, it's good to ask about this if you don't plan on vacating the home for several days while it's being fumigated.

Ask about a renovation schedule

If you're renovating your home and discover signs of a pest infestation, ask the pest controller the best time to have the home treated. It may not be advised to fumigate while the renovation project is underway, as this can scatter those chemicals, or they may mix with construction dust and become ineffective. Ask your pest control company rep what they recommend, given the type of infestation, extent of the renovation and the like.
